Gerry Thomas

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gerry Thomas ( February 17, 1922 - July 18, 2005 ) was an American inventor .

In the 1950s, Thomas developed the TV dinner , a ready-made meal sold on a divided aluminum disposable plate. The TV dinner was intended to heat the food in the oven and to consume it while watching TV. Thomas worked for the frozen food producer Swanson and used the aluminum disposable plates that were already used for meals in airplanes when developing the TV dinner.

During the first year of sales in 1954, Swanson was able to sell 10 million meals instead of the planned 5,000 meals.

Thomas died of cancer in 2005.
