Gerstau is a village in the northwest of the Bergisch city of Remscheid .

The place is located in the statistical district of Kratzberg in the district of Alt-Remscheid, directly on the city limits of Wuppertal-Cronenberg . Gerstau is located 158 meters above sea level in the Morsbachtal between Clemenshammer and Haster Aue at the confluence of the Kleinenhammer Bach in the Morsbach . Morsbachtalstrasse (Landesstrasse 216) and Hastener Strasse (Landesstrasse 415) cross in Gerstau .

Until the municipal reform in 1929, Gerstau belonged to the then independent town of Cronenberg. Up until the end of the 1950s, there was a stop on the Ronsdorf-Müngstener Railway (RME), which ran through the valley and primarily served goods traffic to the companies in the Morsbachtal. Structural systems of the station, which was located east of the crossroads towards Clemenshammer, have been preserved to this day. The Elberfeld - Cronenfeld - Remscheid tram line crossed the RME route at the same level. Today, instead of the tram, a city bus line runs between the cities.

Due to the water power of the streams, metal producing and processing companies settled here early on. There were water hammers , blacksmiths and sanding pots in the vicinity . Even today there are various industrial companies and a car dealership in and around Gerstau.

Benefiting from the good transport connections, Gerstau used to be together with the surrounding villages such as B. Clemenshammer a popular destination with several restaurants. The Röntgenweg , the Wuppertaler Rundweg , a Naturfreundeweg and the Morsbach Adventure Trail cross the town.

There is also a regionally active sheep farm in Gerstau. The rest of an old courtyard to the side of the thoroughfare is reminiscent of old times in its old architectural style. A car dealership that has been based there for many years marks the picture at the intersection.
