Gertrud Kortenbach
Gertrud Kortenbach (born February 2, 1924 in Solingen ; † April 8, 1960 there ) was a German sculptor.
Life
Kortenbach was born as the daughter of a family of manufacturers in Solingen. From 1930 she attended the Weyer elementary school and in 1934 moved to the Ohlig Lyceum. In 1942 she passed the school leaving examination at the August-Dicke-Schule and was then called upon to do compulsory labor and military service.
Her special talent was noticed early on during her school days. Parents and teachers encouraged them. After passing her examination in April 1943, she studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy , initially with Joseph Enseling and Hans Schmitz-Wiedenbrück . In 1945 she was accepted - together with Joseph Beuys - in the master class of the sculptor Ewald Mataré , who became her decisive supporter and inspiration.
After completing her studies in 1948, she returned to Solingen and set up a studio in her parents' company. At the age of 36 she had a fatal accident when she was killed by the heavy wrought iron gate in the park of her parents' house.

Despite her relatively short creative period, she left an extensive work behind. She made her work out of wood, plaster, ivory and bronze. In addition, she created handicraft objects, jewelry, glass windows and furniture; Countless sketches, letters, poems, aphorisms and philosophical writings are also part of her estate. Mataré called her an exception among the students in his obituary. Her last major work, the Grabengel, is on permanent loan to the museum in front of the Museum Baden , the art museum in Solingen.
