Gertrud Spiess

Gertrud Spiess (born April 16, 1914 in Basel ; † July 14, 1995 ) was a Swiss politician ( CVP ). From 1975 to 1983 she was a member of the National Council.

Life

Gertrud Spiess was a grammar school teacher for Latin and ancient Greek. She received her doctorate in 1948 with the thesis " Maḥmūd von Ġazna bei Farīdu'd-dīn ʿAṭṭār " . The doctoral thesis did not appear in print until 1959.

Her life was shaped by her political commitment. For eight years she was a member of the Citizens' Council of the Basel Civic Community , fought for women's suffrage in Switzerland and made the leap to the Grand Council of the Canton of Basel-Stadt in 1968 . In 1974 she was the first woman to hold the office of governor in the city of Basel and in 1975 the first woman to be elected President of the Grand Council of the Canton of Basel-Stadt. From 1975 to 1983 she was a member of the National Council.
