The Gertrudiskerk is a church in the center of the Dutch city of Bergen op Zoom .

history

The oldest part of the church is the body of the steeple (popularly called 'De Peperbus'), which is dated to around 1370 and was probably part of the predecessor building of today's church. In the 15th century, an ambulatory choir with ray chapels was built in the Brabant Gothic style. In the context of the Reformation turmoil, the church was looted in 1580 and temporarily served military purposes. In 1586 it was used for Reformed worship. Parts of the church were demolished at the end of the 17th century, and the stone material was then used to build the fortress. In 1747 the church was badly damaged by French bombardment and was rebuilt in simpler forms in 1750. In 1966 the Reformed congregation transferred the church to the communal congregation because they could not bear the renovation costs. In 1972, lightning struck the church. In the 1980s the building was renovated.

Today the Gertrudiskerk serves both Catholics and Reformed people for their services.

View through the church

The organ was built in 1864 by the organ builders Ibach brothers (Wuppertal) with 41 stops on three manuals and a pedal ; the magnificent organ case was designed by the architect EAJ Cels (Brussels). 1914–1915 the organ was reduced to 25 registers on two manuals and pedal by the organ building company Vermeulen (Weert). In the middle of the 20th century the disposition was adjusted according to the (neo-baroque) sound ideals of the time. Since 1997 the instrument has been and is being restored step by step and returned to its original condition. The slider chests -instrument today 42 registers (2,417 pipes ) on three manuals and pedal . The playing and stop actions are mechanical.
