Gervase Mathew

Gervase Mathew OP (born March 14, 1905 in London , † April 4, 1976 ) was a British Dominican and Byzantinist .

Life

Anthony Gervase Mathew is the second son of a lawyer. His older brother, David Mathew, also made a career in the Order. Her father studies before sending her to Balliol College at Oxford University and then to the British School at Athens . He joined the Order of Preachers in 1928 before being ordained a priest in 1934.

At Oxford, Mathew teaches a variety of subjects at Blackfriars Hall , the Dominican Department, including theology and modern history. His interests are diverse, from the history of the Byzantine Empire ( lecturer in Byzantine Studies at Oxford University from 1947 to 1971) to African art (he accompanied his brother to the British colonies of Africa from 1940 to 1950) through medieval England, History and archeology in general. He is also part of the Inklings informal discussion group .
