Gervinuspark

The park Gervinuspark located in present-day Essen district Frohnhausen . Until 1959 this area was Essen's Westfriedhof. The tomb of the first and only mayor of the Altendorf mayor , Wilhelm Kerckhoff , then the largest rural community in Prussia , is still there today.

history

Municipal cemetery

As early as the 17th century, a denser collection of Kotten , called Vogenbeck , developed between today's Gervinuspark and today's Onckenstrasse .

The construction of the communal cemetery began around 1895, when Frohnhausen formed the mayor's office Altendorf with Holsterhausen and Altendorf . It existed from 1874 to 1901, when the three communities were incorporated into the city of Essen. On June 21, 1900, the first and only mayor, Wilhelm Kerckhoff, was buried in the family vault of the cemetery. The resting place is maintained today by the city of Essen as an honor grave. Around 1902, the city bought additional areas to expand the cemetery, so that at times it stretched from Frohnhauser Strasse to Berliner Strasse (then Plattenstrasse) and from Möserstrasse to Kerckhoffstrasse. This was named after the mayor in October 1894 on the occasion of his anniversary in service.

Initially, the burial site was on the western Essen settlement border. But the population density of Essen rose so quickly due to the high immigration of workers for the coal mining and the nearby Krupp cast steel factory that the cemetery was soon near the center of the Frohnhausen district. It was finally given up in 1959.

Gervinuspark

The park, named after the historian and politician Georg Gottfried Gervinus , was created in 1960 from the former cemetery, with old trees and playgrounds.

Nevertheless, some gravestones from the early years of the 20th century and the crypt of the Kerckhoff family can still be found here.

Today the Gervinuspark has an area of around five hectares . It was not until 2004 that the former mourning hall was demolished and the fenced-off toddler playground with water play area was created in the southeastern area. In 2008 the area of the old depot was also designed as a parking area. Furthermore, there is now another playground for older children, a football field and some table tennis tables in the park.

The Gervinus Community Elementary School borders the area in the east. Also in the eastern part of the park is a memorial stone with the inscription: The Victims of War and Violence .

On June 9, 2014, the Ela thunderstorm front severely damaged and partially destroyed almost all of the old trees. Many of these trees were uprooted by severe gusts of wind or had to be felled due to major damage. The park was closed to the public during this time for security reasons.

In 2017, a green steel frame in the form of a pavilion was erected on a hill. In September 2018, the redesigned park entrance at the corner of Gervinusstrasse and Grevelstrasse with a raised bed and seating was opened. A high five-digit amount was invested for this.
