Protective measures

Excavator dredging the silted up pond

In 1984 the heavily silted up pond was cleared and fenced in by hand during a work assignment by the Association for Nature and Bird Protection in the Hochsauerlandkreis (VNV). The fence was drawn so that the grazing cattle could no longer come to the pond. The area was leased in 1988 by the VNV. From 1984 to 1988 there was an oral protection agreement with the owner. In 1993 it was designated a protected landscape component. Until the end of the 1990s, the pond was cleared of sludge by the VNV on a regular basis. After that, the desludging operations were discontinued. When the pond was almost silted up in 2008, a mini excavator was used. 30 m³ of excavated material were dredged and taken to landfill. The measure was paid for with funding from the Lower Landscape Authority of the Hochsauerlandkreis. The VNV was awarded the 2008 RWE Climate Protection Prize from the city of Sundern for its long-term protection work on the pond .
