Society for Frankfurt History

The Society for Frankfurt History is a history association in Frankfurt am Main .

In 1837 the Society for Frankfurt's History and Art was founded by the mayors at the time , nine aldermen and eleven senators of the Free City of Frankfurt with the aim of "working towards spreading knowledge and interest in the history and art of the city of Frankfurt." In 1858 they merged with the association for history and antiquity founded in the previous year . The association took up residence in the stone house . The works published by the association included the Frankfurt topography by Johann Georg Battonn , published in seven volumes from 1861 to 1875 under the title Local Description of the City of Frankfurt am Main .

In 1878 the association transferred its collection to the Historical Museum and its documents and books to the Frankfurt City Archives . The collections were lost in the air raids on Frankfurt during World War II .

In 1934 the association changed its name to Frankfurter Verein für Geschichte und Landeskunde and in 2001 to Gesellschaft für Frankfurter Geschichte eV

Publications include the magazine Archive for Frankfurt History and Art and the series Studies on Frankfurt History.
