Johann Georg Battonn (born May 14, 1740 in Mainz , † April 21, 1827 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German historian and Catholic priest .

life and work

Battonn was the eldest son of the Mainz wheat beer brewer Damian Johann Georg Battonn (also Bathon or Bathong ) and his wife Anna Sophia nee. Balthes . He became canon of St. Bartholomew's monastery in Frankfurt on December 6, 1759 , where he spent most of his life. From 1760 he lived in the Arnsburger Hof , in one of the vicarage houses that belonged to the Fronhof of the monastery. In 1802 he became the last custodian and last archivist of the monastery , which was secularized on October 19, 1802 and fell into the possession of the city. He spent his old age in Frankfurt.

Battonn's most important work is the local description of the city of Frankfurt am Main , a collection of topographical information about all locations and buildings of the old imperial city from the end of the 18th century. Although the work does not meet today's standards of source criticism - or even those of the 19th century - it is still an important milestone in Frankfurt historiography, as it partly falls back on sources that no longer exist today (e.g. the private archives of the Catholic donor families).

Battonn could no longer publish his work because he became blind in old age . He handed over his work to Johann Karl von Fichard for completion and publication. However, Fichard died in 1829 before he could complete this work. Battonn's topography from his estate also came into the possession of the Frankfurt City Archives .

It was not until 1861 to 1875 that the local description of the city of Frankfurt am Main appeared in seven volumes, published by the Frankfurter Verein für Geschichte und Alterthumskunde .

In addition to the topography, he compiled a list of the provosts of the Bartholomäusstift and wrote Der Kaiserdom zu Frankfurt a. M. , which was published posthumously by Ernst Kelchner in 1869 .

Battonnstrasse in Frankfurt's old town is named after Johann Georg Battonn .
