Rudolf Jung (historian)
Jakob Ernst Rudolf Jung (born March 24, 1859 in Frankfurt am Main ; † April 26, 1922 there ) was a German archivist and historian .
Life
Jung was a son of the consistorial councilor Philipp Jung (1828–1902). He attended the model school from 1866 to 1872 and the municipal high school in Frankfurt am Main from 1872 to 1879 . After studying in Leipzig , Freiburg , Berlin and Marburg , he did his military service in Frankfurt.
From 1884 to 1886 Jung participated in the publication of the Reichstag files, which were overseen by the Historical Commission of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .
Since 1883, Jung belonged to the Free German Hochstift , whose librarian and administrative clerk he was appointed in 1884. In 1888 he succeeded Hermann Grotefend as head of the Frankfurt City Archives . He created a systematic order of the archive material, which should make the collection usable for the general public and which in principle still exists today. Under his leadership, which he exercised until his death and thus for almost 34 years, the Frankfurt City Archives became the best-organized and structured archive in Germany.
From 1883 he belonged to the Frankfurt Association for History and Archeology , whose first chairman he was from 1883 to 1913 and whose archive and library he managed from 1888. As editor, he was responsible for the association's publications, including the archive for Frankfurt's history and art , the quarterly Alt-Frankfurt publication and the communications on Roman finds in Heddernheim . He was also a co-founder of the Association for the Historical Museum and the Historical Commission of the City of Frankfurt am Main .
Jung worked for numerous specialist publications and freelanced for daily newspapers in Frankfurt, including the Frankfurter Zeitung , Frankfurter Nachrichten and Didaskalia .
The Jungstraße in Frankfurt-Bockenheim was named after Jung . His grave is in the Frankfurt main cemetery .
