The law on the establishment of a Federal Office for Foreign Affairs ( BfAAG ) regulates the establishment of the Federal Office for Foreign Affairs on January 1, 2021 with its seat in Brandenburg an der Havel . The Federal Office is subordinate to the Foreign Office and supports the Foreign Service in the field of foreign affairs with administration and infrastructure, funding management as well as legal and consular matters . The law comprises ten paragraphs.

The bill of the Federal Government dated January 3, 2020. The reason given is that the Foreign Office should certain non-ministerial tasks are relieved. The draft law passed the Federal Council on February 14, 2020 without any objections. The first reading in the Bundestag took place on March 4, 2020. There, the draft law was referred to the Foreign Affairs Committee for advice , which submitted its recommendation for a resolution and its report on May 13, 2020. The committees for home affairs and homeland , for law and consumer protection as well as for labor and social affairs were involved. The draft law was discussed on May 14, 2020 in the second and third reading in the plenary session of the Bundestag and approved in the committee version. Compared to the draft law of the federal government, provisions on the seat of the authority and on the compensation allowance have been changed in paragraphs 1 and 10 of the law. The Federal Council made no motion to convene the mediation committee . Thus, the law could be executed by the Federal President on June 12, 2020 and announced in the Federal Law Gazette on June 23, 2020 . It came into force the following day.
