Gessen was a municipality, from 1950 a district of Kauern in the Greiz district in Thuringia .

Gessen was located southeast of Gera, about six kilometers from Ronneburg in the Gessental, through which the Gessenbach runs.

history

The place was first mentioned in 1358 as Guzen . At the end of 1885, 107 residents lived in 18 houses in the village, the corridor covered around 187 hectares. In 1948 there were 164 residents in 18 houses. On July 1, 1950, the place and Lichtenberg were incorporated into Kauern.

Despite the uranium open pit Lichtenberg of the SDAG Wismut , which expanded in a westerly direction from 1952 , demolition of the village of Gessen was not planned. In 1966 there was a major slide in the heap towards the village. Despite efforts to secure the slope and save the place, the majority of the residents decided to leave the place in exchange for payment of compensation.
