The Gessenbach is an eastern and orographically right-hand tributary of the White Elster in the Greiz district in Thuringia . The Gessental is named after him .
course
The Gessenbach rises northeast of Raitzhain , an eastern district of Ronneburg . Its source lies in the triangle between the federal highway 4 (with junction Ronneburg ) in the north, the federal highway 7 in the southeast and the railway line Meuselwitz-Ronneburg in the west - in a grove 295 m above sea level. NN .
Initially the Gessenbach flows through Raitzhain and shortly afterwards through the core town of Ronneburg, from where it forms the Gessental (see below ). There it crosses under the 79 m long Gessental bridge of the Gößnitz – Gera railway line and the 225 m long pedestrian bridge Drachenschwanz and then passes the Ronneburg district of Grobsdorf north of the valley .
Then the Gessenbach reaches - with another crossing under the railway line - at about 230 m above sea level. NN the urban area of Gera to run along the railway line through the Gera districts of Collis and Pforten .
The Gessenbach then reaches the Geraer Mühlgraben , an inner-city side canal of the White Elster in the area of the former Gera-Süd freight station , which it crosses on a trough bridge ( ⊙ ); two overflows there feed the moat. Finally it flows - tunneling under the connection of the Elsterdamm ( B 2 ) to the city ring south-east ( B 92 ) - to the Weisse Elster. His mouth is just 100 meters north of on the White Elster leading bridge in the southeast of the city ring Southeast subsequent Vogt highway .
Gessental
General
Until 1968 the Gößnitz – Gera railway ran through the Gessental. The route was then moved north and partially covered with overburden from the SDAG Wismut mining operations .
The eastern end of the Gessental, which has been badly damaged by uranium ore mining, is today included in the New Ronneburg Landscape , which was part of the 2007 Federal Horticultural Show . The wooden bridge Drachenschwanz leads over the Badergraben , which reaches the Gessental from the city center of Ronneburg and flows into the Gessenbach immediately west of the New Ronneburg Landscape . In the course of the redevelopment of the uranium ore mining area, the stream, which was largely piped in the Wismut times, was exposed and renatured .
Also in the lower part of the Gessental a new stream bed was built for the Gessenbach. This happened in connection with the construction of tram line 1 from Gera- Zwötzen to Gera- Untermhaus and the Buga in 2007 .
Gessental cycle path
The 8 km long Gessental Cycle Path was created between Gera and Ronneburg as part of the BUGA 2007 as part of the Thuringian city chain .
pollution
Scientists at the University of Jena have shown that near the banks of the Ronneburg stream, up to a meter deep, there are increased concentrations of heavy metals such as uranium in the soil.
