The Getriebebau Nord GmbH & Co. KG, internationally known as Nord Drive Systems, manufactures mechanical and electronic drive technology and is one of the largest gear motors maker in the world. Nord is a medium-sized family company with headquarters in Bargteheide near Hamburg.

history

Getriebebau Nord was founded in 1965 by Gustav Adolf Küchenmeister and Günter Schlicht, both of whom had previously worked in the drive industry. Küchenmeister brought in sales experience, Schlicht's particular strength lay in technical know-how. In the first few years, Nord only produced gear housings, shafts and flanges itself and bought all other components. In addition, the company started its own gear production in Glinde in 1977, and then began to expand the now extraordinarily wide range of gears. In 1979, Nord began establishing subsidiaries around the world. Nord has also been manufacturing drive electronics since the 1980s. Initially this was limited to frequency converters , for which they teamed up with Enercon in Aurich, Lower Saxony . In 1983 the company also built its own electric motor production facility; by taking over an engine plant in Italy, this area was significantly strengthened from 1997 onwards. Günter Schlicht has since left the company. In the first decade of the 21st century, Nord finally brought a servo controller (an electronic controller required for demanding, highly dynamic drive applications ) onto the market. GA Küchenmeister has now also withdrawn from the management of the company and passed it on to his children: his daughter Jutta Humbert and his son Ullrich Küchenmeister have been managing directors since 1991.

Organization and business areas

Nord has around 4,000 employees worldwide (as of February 2019) and last (in the 2018 financial year) had a turnover of around 700 million euros. The internationalization of the company began just a decade and a half after it was founded. Gradually, branches and assembly plants were opened on several continents. In 2010, Nord has its own agencies in over 60 countries. Production takes place in four northern German plants, namely the headquarters in Bargteheide as well as in Glinde (Schleswig-Holstein), Aurich (Lower Saxony) and Gadebusch (Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania), and abroad in San Giovanni in northern Italy, in Nowa Sol in Poland and in France Vieux-Thann, in Waunakee in the USA, in Suzhou in southern China and in Pune in the Indian state of Maharashtra. The customer-specific final assembly and delivery of drives is carried out by an assembly center in the customer's region, which is located at around 36 locations worldwide. In order to be able to deliver quickly and flexibly, most systems are based on modular construction. For example, Nord has implemented the modular construction principle widespread in the drive technology industry very extensively for worm gears and offers a modular series that allows the construction of tens of thousands of different, application-specific drive variants from a manageable number of elements that are readily available in stock or have it delivered quickly.

Nord supports and supplies thousands of machine and plant manufacturers in various industries. The spectrum ranges from solutions with rather simple compact drives, for example for conveyor belts at airports, to special solutions such as particularly low-noise drives, such as those required behind the scenes for theater stages, in operas and concert halls.

Inventions and special technical solutions

Getriebebau Nord invented the block housing concept for geared motors in 1980/81 and was the first manufacturer to offer drives in block housing. In this innovation, the housing consists of a single block. Before, however, it was usually composed of two half-shells, on the connecting surface of which forces acting during operation could lead to twisting. With a one-piece block, this phenomenon, which is detrimental to the reliability and longevity of the geared motor, is simply eliminated. Since the principle was not patented comprehensively during the invention, the idea quickly caught on in the entire industry. Today, geared motor models from almost all manufacturers are housed in one-piece housing blocks.

In the area of drive electronics, Nord implemented an unusual concept in the hardware design of the in-house servo controller. In contrast to the architecture that was customary up to then, practically all tasks in Nord's controller are performed by a single DSP ( digital signal processor ). This has a speed advantage because, in contrast to conventional controllers, such a servo does not have to internally exchange and synchronize data between different subsystems of the electronics.

In the market and as a technical pioneer, this idea and the corresponding product were not as successful as with the block housing concept. In the automation industry, to which almost all of Nord's customers belong, the company, according to a market study from 2004, was hardly perceived as a full-service provider at the beginning of the last decade, despite the already broad range of power electronics, but primarily as a mechanical specialist .
