Gezira (Arabic for island; el-Gezira /الجزيرة / al-Ǧazīra ) is Cairo's largest Nile island . It is located in the city center and is divided into two residential areas on July 26th Street. Ez-Zamalek ( Arabic الزمالك az-Zamālik ) is in the north and the residential district el-Gezira in the south. The Gezira Sporting Club extends in between. Occasionally the whole island is also called ez-Zamalek .
There are several embassies, many hotels and restaurants, the opera (1988) and the television tower on the island . This started with the Gezira Palace , which was originally a government guest house built by the German architect Julius Franz from 1863 to 1868 and is now part of a hotel complex ( Marriott ).
Several bridges lead to the island, including the at-Tahrir-Bridge (Qasr-an-Nil-Brücke, Arabic: كوبري قصر النيل) from Tahrir Square .
There is a Metroline 2 stop at the opera on the island .
