gFTP is a free (and open source ) FTP - access software , which primarily on Unix -like systems is used, but also Mac OS X can be used. It contains both a graphical user interface (which GTK + uses) and a command line interface . gFTP was published under the GPL in 1998 and has so far been translated into 41 languages.

The program offers support for the protocols FTP , FTPS (limited), HTTP , HTTPS , SFTP , FSP and FXP .

As with many classic file managers, the user interface of gFTP is dominated by two sub-windows. The left part of the window contains the local file system by default , while the right part contains the file system of the server that is accessible via the network . Below the two sub-windows there is a status line which shows the transfer status of the data transfers that are currently active or those in the queue. Below this is a message log which lists the commands executed by gFTP and the server's responses to them. Individual connections to various servers can be saved in a hierarchically structured bookmark collection with all the necessary settings (such as the associated local directory on the workstation). These bookmarks are aids for quick connection establishment.
