Ghassan Tueni

Ghassan Tueni ( Arabic غسان تويني) (Born January 5, 1926 in Beirut ; † June 8, 2012 ibid.) Was a Lebanese journalist, editor, diplomat and politician.

Life

Tueni came from a Greek Orthodox family. After studying philosophy, he joined the newspaper an-Nahar and his father's publishing house of the same name, where he was editor from 1948 to 1999 and from 2003 until his death. In 1951 he became a member of the National Assembly . There he was alternately Minister for Information, Education, Tourism and Industry until 1977. he was also deputy head of government. He was Lebanon's Ambassador to the United Nations during the civil war from 1977 to 1982 .

He was married to the poet Nadia Tuéni, née Hammade, until her death in 1983. His son Gebran Tueni , a journalist and parliamentarian, was killed by a car bomb in December 2005 . Ghassan Tueni continued his parliamentary work after the attack and also took over his son's editorial work. His second wife was Chadia Tuéni.
