Geluveld (also: Gheluvelt ) is a village in the municipality of Zonnebeke in Belgium . The place has about 1,500 inhabitants (2006) and is a few kilometers south of the main town on the N8 and A19. The path leads here to Ypres .

history

The place was first mentioned in 1109 as Gelevelt .

Its location on the way to Ypres made the place the battlefield of the First Battle of Flanders on October 29, 1914 . After heavy fighting, the place was conquered by the Germans and only given up on September 28, 1918. The place was completely destroyed in the fighting.
