Giambattista Torricelli
Giambattista Torricelli (born May 12, 1779 in Lugano ; † March 7, 1848 there ) was a Swiss Roman Catholic clergyman and writer.
Life
Giambattista Torricelli was the son of Christoforo Torricelli and his wife Marianna, geb. Piccoli.
He attended the College of San Antonio in Lugano , led by the Somas people , and then studied theology at the Seminario patriarcale in Venice and at the University of Padua . When he had finished his studies, he returned to Ticino and was ordained a priest in 1802 . In 1806 he was appointed canonical theologian of the Lugano chapter.
Angiola Pizzagalli, b. Maghetti, bequeathed a considerable fortune to the establishment of an orphanage, which her father Anton Maghetti increased in 1830 by 40,000 lire and another 50,000 lire from her mother. Giambattista Torricelli received the entire amount as administrator of the legacy for further use; contractual clauses stipulated that he could use the financial resources without any obligation to account, whether spiritual, secular or political. This led to the establishment of a boarding school for girls and an orphanage for boys in Lugano in 1844.
Writing
Giambattista Torricelli was the managing editor of the magazine Il Cattolico , which was founded in 1833 and appeared every two weeks, and author of the ten-volume work Orazioni sacre e dissertazioni storico-polemiche . In his writings his deep aversion to any form of liberalism can be seen and he vehemently defended the church against demands for secularization .
