Gianluigi Benedetti

Gianluigi Benedetti (* 1959 in Rome ) is an Italian diplomat who has been the government's ambassador in Jerusalem since October 23, 2017 .

Education

In 1982, he graduated in law at the University of La Sapienza as a Master of Laws from.

Career

In 1985 he joined the foreign service. From 1987 to 1991 he was employed in Tokyo. From 1991 to 1995 he was employed in Washington, DC . From 1996 to 1997 he worked in the Foreign Minister's office for parliamentary relations. From 1998 to 1999 he was part of the "Fellowship of Hope" program at the NATO office of the US State Department. In 2000 he was Counselor in Washington, DC

From 2001 to 2002 he was the personal assistant to the Foreign Minister. In 2003 he coordinated the website of the Italian EU Presidency. From 2004 to 2006 he was deputy head of the policy planning department and head of the statistical department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

From 2006 to 2008 he was diplomatic advisor to the Italian Minister for Public Administration and Innovation. From 2008 to 2011 he was confirmed in the same position under the new government.

In 2011 he was appointed diplomatic advisor to the Minister of Education, Universities and Research. He was responsible for coordinating the international activities of the Ministry of Education and relations with research centers and universities in international and European affairs.

From 2012 to 2015 he was head of the Italian delegation of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA).

In 2014 he was responsible for preparing and leading the semester of the Italian Presidency of the Council of Europe in the fields of education, research and space. During the Italian G7 presidency he is responsible for the coordination and preparation of the G7 meeting of science ministers in Turin.

In his capacity as diplomatic advisor, he promoted and led several flagship initiatives such as the “Italy-China Week for Science, Technology and Innovation”, the “National Award for Innovation”, the European program “Partnership for Research and Innovation in the Mediterranean Region” ( FINE). He also organized several international representations of representatives of the Italian higher education and research systems in different countries including China, Israel, Morocco, Argentina and Brazil.

On February 17, 2017, he was appointed ambassador to Tel Aviv .
