Gibbs is an impact crater on the eastern edge of the lunar front , northeast of Humboldt crater and southeast of Ansgarius . The crater rim is moderately eroded, the inside uneven. An impact on the north-eastern rim of the crater created a small radiation system with a high albedo center .

The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1964 after the US physicist Josiah Willard Gibbs .
