Gibraltar (Zulia)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gibraltar is a small town in Venezuela . It is located in the municipality of Sucre in the state of Zulia . It lies between Bobures in the south and Boscan in the north on the south bank of Lake Maracaibo . The population is around 4000.

It was founded as San Antonio de Gibraltar in February 1592 by the Spanish conquistador Gonzalo Piña Ludueña . Ludueña (1545–1600), who was administrative chief of the Spanish province of Venezuela between 1597 and 1600, came from the Spanish (now British) Gibraltar and named the new city after his hometown.

The city had played a significant role in Spanish colonial history in the past. Gibraltar was the most important port in the city of Mérida and an important hub for cocoa. In 1667 the city was sacked by the pirate François l'Olonnais . The British pirate Henry Morgan later conquered the city. In 1678 Michel de Granmont occupied the city, plundered it and burned parts of it down. The damage was so immense that the city practically ceased to exist in 1680. Their meaning was lost forever.
