The North Mole Lighthouse (Gibraltar North Mole Lighthouse) is one of several lighthouses in Gibraltar , a British overseas territory on the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula . The structure, also known as Gibraltar "D" Head Lighthouse , is a cast - iron tower painted black on the west side of the Rock of Gibraltar , on the western arm of the north pier at the port of Gibraltar . It is operated by the 'Gibraltar Port Authority'.
location
The port of Gibraltar ( Gibraltar Harbor ) is located on the western side of the British overseas territory of Gibraltar , at latitude 36 ° 09 ′ north and longitude 5 ° 20 ′ west. The harbor is protected not only by the Rock of Gibraltar, but also by three breakwater walls : the North Mole with its westward arm, the Detached Mole and the South Mole . Entrances to the north and south lead to the port. The northern port entrance is between the western arm of the North Mole and the Detached Mole, and the southern entrance separates the Detached Mole from the South Mole.
The North Mole Lighthouse stands at the southern end of the western arm of the L-shaped North Mole of the port of Gibraltar, at the D-shaped head of the North Mole; from this also the alternative name of the building results. The lighthouse and port are north of the eastern end of the Strait of Gibraltar and its access to the Mediterranean Sea on the west side of the rock.
Both the tower and the site where the tower is located are not open to the public. The facility is operated by the Gibraltar Port Authority. The Gibraltar North Mole Lighthouse is listed under the number D2448 on the Admiralty Digital List of Lights (ADLL) maintained by the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office . The US National Geospatial Intelligence Agency (NGA) has the system under number 4236, and the Amateur Radio Lighthouse Society (ARLHS) has assigned the designation GIB-005.
history
The original lamp and gallery platform of the 17-meter-high black cast iron octagonal tower have been replaced to increase the height of the fire. The round skeleton cylinder was replaced by a square skeleton construction. (A similar tower at the north end of the South Mole differs in that it has retained the original gallery.)
The lighthouse serves as a navigation aid , especially in the port and its immediate vicinity. A red flashing light serves as identification in quick succession, the range is five nautical miles . Fire height is 18 m.
