The Giessen Rowing Club Hassia 1906 e. V. (short: Giessener RC Hassia ) is the largest rowing club in Giessen . The club is characterized by a wide range of sporting activities for children, leisure and competitive athletes. In addition to rowing , there has been a dragon boat department for several years .

history

At the beginning of the 20th century it was not possible for everyone in Giessen to practice rowing. The so-called “amateur paragraph” decided by the already existing clubs of the German Rowing Association only allowed those active membership in rowing clubs who did not have to earn a living “with their own hands”. Rowing in a club without making these conditions possible for everyone was the reason to found the "RC Hassia". The founding protocol states:

“At the meeting on August 23, 1906, six gentlemen appeared. Mr. Rostert opened the meeting, mentioned the reason for being together with the following words:

"Since in Gießen it has been difficult for every innocent man who has a real interest in rowing to enter the local rowing sport, we have come together to found a new rowing club" Hassia ", which is supposed to remedy the abuses described above." "

The newly founded rowing club Hassia did not meet the conditions for admission to the German Rowing Association. Therefore, he joined the "Free German Rowing Association" and the "South German Rowing Association" on September 4, 1906. The RC Hassia carried out its first regatta on July 5, 1908 with great success under the care of the "South German Rowing Association". This lasted three days, which was unusual for Germany at the time and at best known in England ( Henley Royal Regatta ). It brought the host the first victory in an eighth race.

With victories in the years 1911 to 1914, the RC Hassia had also earned a good reputation in international rowing. In 1913 and 1914 the club was invited to regattas in Lucerne and Prague. The looming First World War prevented participation in the Olympic Games. After the Second World War , the damaged boathouse of RC Hassia was rebuilt and rowing operations resumed.

In the following years, athletes from the RC Hassia were successful regionally and nationally. In 1969 the RC Hassia was the most successful Hessian rowing club in youth work. The new boathouse was completed in 1980 with the support of the city of Giessen and a great deal of commitment from its members. After Ruth Kaps won several medals at the German Championships, she secured the bronze medal in the lightweight double scull in 1995 at the World Championships in Tampere (Finland). In 1996 she took part in the Atlanta Olympics and finished eighth.

In the meantime, further departments grew within the rowing club. For many years, the RC Hassia organized swim festivals and basketball cups. Shortly after the turn of the millennium, the dragon boat department was another sporting field of activity for water sports enthusiasts in Gießen. In 2003 the Gießener Drachenbootcup was launched, which has meanwhile become an integral part of the Giessen city festival. Together with the Giessen Rowing Society, the Giessen eight was formed in 2012 and starts in the German rowing league .

In 2014 a new career in rowing became apparent - Marc Weber won his first U19 German championship in the four-four in Brandenburg in 2014. An impressive series of medal wins at various championships began: German champion in one 2017-2019. Internationally certainly the highlights as vice world champion in single U23 in 2018 and then world champion U23 in single in 2019. Marc Weber is a "home grown" of the rowing club, he learned rowing in the children's training of the club and developed into a world class rower.

Sporting successes

Dragon boat

Around the turn of the millennium, a number of athletes, including former performance rowers of the RC Hassia, came together to paddle in so-called outriggers and dragon boats in addition to rowing. From the group of "Wild Hassians" an active paddle department developed in the club. In the meantime, athletes not only compete in German championships, but also successfully compete in international dragon boat competitions as part of the German national team. In 2018 and 2019, titles were won in the best determination in the 20-man dragon boat

Dragon boat cup

In 2003 the Gießener Drachenbootcup was launched, which the Hassia rowing club has held annually since then. The cup is now an integral part of the Giessen city festival in summer.

Rowing Bundesliga (RBL)

At the beginning of 2012, the "Gießen-Achter" was founded together with the Giessen RG. After the rowers of both clubs had already competed together in various national and international regattas, the athletes are now starting as one team in the rowing Bundesliga . The 2013 season ended the team in 2nd place in the table, rose to the first division and was voted Team of the Year. After relegation in 2014, the team around team boss Eric Baumann is back in the 2nd Bundesliga.
