Gigabit Passive Optical Network

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gigabit Passive Optical Network ( GPON ) is a shared-medium technology based on passive optical networks ( PON ). It enables the user to provide data rates of up to 2.5 Gigabit / s in the downstream and 1.25 Gigabit / s upstream direction per cell.

GPON works with a generic encapsulation (GEM), with which Ethernet frames and data can be transmitted in time division multiplex ( TDM ) over a GPON connection. In contrast to BPON , data rates in the gigabit range can be achieved with GPON in both directions. The ITU recommendation G.984 defines data transmission rates of 1.25 Gbit / s and 2.5 Gbit / s for the downlink . The uplink is supported at speeds of 125 and 622 Mbit / s as well as 1.25 and 2.5 Gbit / s. The ITU has defined separate wavelengths for the transmission of video . However, since video signals can also be transmitted using the IP protocol via GPON, it is conceivable that the separate wavelengths will remain unused.

Distribution in Germany

As part of a pilot project that began German Telekom in 2009, GPON based on the FTTB network topology in the Dresden districts Striesen and Blasewitz introduce to DSL or VDSL -Internetzugänge with broadband format to offer. 75 percent of households in the area were connected to the broadband network using this technology. For buildings with fewer than five residential units, however, initially only the fiber optic cables were laid, but the associated GPON connection technology was not installed due to the high investment costs. (These newly laid lines should only be used later - as part of FTTH connections, as soon as they are technically available.) This means that around 25 percent of households in the area would remain without a broadband connection for several years. These remaining apartments were not connected until 2013.

GPON has so far been used in all of Deutsche Telekom's FTTH expansions . The FTTB expansion of the Cologne provider NetCologne is also based on GPON.
