Broadband network

Antenna connector also known as Belling-Lee connector

A broadband network , also broadband cable network ( BK network), a data network , in which, in contrast to the baseband , the network digital user data is not transmitted directly, but one or more radio frequency carriers modulated be.

Different frequency ranges for transmitting and receiving data is used in general, the (by analog -working) converters are connected.

In the 1980s, broadband technology, using proven high-frequency components from cable television technology, made it possible to implement networks that could be more complex and spatially more extensive than was possible with baseband technology.

Due to the rapidly increasing speeds of baseband networks , the use of fiber optic cables and the availability of cheaper, faster network components such as switches , this technology is now out of date in the field of wired local networks and is practically no longer used. Applications of broadband technology that still exist today are Internet connections via TV cable networks and wireless networks .

With the advent of fast Internet connections such as DSL , the term broadband is meanwhile being used for all (subjectively) fast data connections.

Germany

According to the Frankfurter Rundschau present response of the Federal Ministry of Transport and digital infrastructure to Sven-Christian Kindler ( Bundestag spokesman of the Alliance 90 / The Greens Budgetary Policy) from March 2018, the deployment of broadband networks is only progressing slowly: Of the purpose by the federal government provided 1.56 billion euros were spent between 2015 and 2017, only 27.7 million (= 1.8%). Business Insider writes, citing the Federal Ministry of Finance, that of the 2.4 billion euros made available by the federal and state governments, only 27.2 million euros were spent on broadband expansion in 2019. The reason are bureaucratic hurdles. In an international comparison, Germany ranks 16th in the broadband expansion category according to a location index of 21 OECD countries.

In July 2020 it was reported that of the 11 billion euros in funding made available by the Federal Ministry of Transport for the expansion of broadband, around 570 million euros (since 2015) have been paid out to cities and municipalities. Of this, around 500 million euros were spent on specific construction measures. The rest (70 million euros) went to consulting firms.

Switzerland

In Switzerland, 30 percent of households are connected via fiber optics. The residents of larger cities have an advantage in terms of speed and the competition between providers.
