An old Gilbarco gas pump

Gilbarco Inc. , widely known under the brand name Gilbarco Veeder-Root , is an American mechanical engineering company specializing in the equipment of gas stations . Gilbarco Veeder-Root is a subsidiary of the Fortive conglomerate , which was formerly part of the Danaher Corporation . The product range includes fuel pumps and measuring systems for underground tanks as well as cash register systems.

history

In 1870, Charles Gilbert and John Barker founded the Gilbert & Barker Manufacturing Company in Springfield , Massachusetts . At the beginning of the company's history there was the construction of gasification plants for raw gasoline , which was used for the operation of lamps at that time. In this way Gilbert & Barker became one of the largest sellers of petroleum products in the United States at the time. In 1884 the Gilbert & Barker Manufacturing Company was bought up by the Pratt Manufacturing Company, a subsidiary of Standard Oil of New York (later Exxon ). After selling his shares, Gilbert retired from business at the age of 41, while Barker continued to assume leadership roles within the acquired company. It was not until 26 years later, in 1910, that the first fuel pump was manufactured, the manufacture of which was also forced by the triumphant advance of electric light, which continued to decrease the importance of gas lighting systems. The fuel pump was used to pump gasoline from underground storage tanks into the vehicle tank. In 1912 and 1965, the company headquarters was relocated to a different location. From 1912, the business was managed from West Springfield, near the former location, and since 1965 the head office has been in Greensboro, North Carolina. Also in 1965 the company 's name was simplified to “Gilbarco”. In 1987 Gilbarco was taken over by the British General Electric Company . Since a company acquisition in 1997, the German market leader for petrol pumps and tank systems Salzkotten from the Westphalian town of Salzkotten has been part of Gilbarco. After another takeover of Gilbarco by Danaher in 2002, the company merged with the Danaher subsidiary Veeder-Root. Gilbarco Veeder-Root has been part of Fortive Corporation since the Danaher Group's mechanical engineering division was spun off in 2016.
