Gilbert Agius (born February 21, 1974 in Valletta ) is a former Maltese football player . He played a total of 451 games in the Maltese Premier League . In 1992, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2001, 2008, 2011 and 2012 he won the Maltese championship with Valletta FC .

Career

Agius played from 1990 to 2013 for Valletta FC , which was one of the most successful football clubs in Malta in the late 1990s. With the capital club he won the national championship eight times, the cup eight times and the Supercup five times. Valletta had been without a title since 2001, before another championship was won in 2008. Agius was the captain of the Citizens .

Agius has played in the Maltese national team since 1993 . He has now been used in over 100 international matches and scored eight goals. He is one of the players with the most appearances in Malta's national team. On February 7, 2007, he scored the goal in Malta's sensational 1-1 draw against Austria . Agius was also the captain of the national team.
