Giles Radice Heneage, Baron Radice , PC (* 4. October 1936 ) is a British trade union functionary and politician of the Labor Party , which for 28 years member of the House of Commons was, and since 2001 a member of the House of Lords is.

Life

Member of the House of Commons and opposition politician

After attending Winchester College, Radice studied at Magdalen College at the University of Oxford and then worked as a union official and most recently head of the research department of the National Union of General and Municipal Workers (GMWU). In the general election on October 15, 1964 and on March 31, 1966 , he ran for the Labor Party twice unsuccessfully in the constituency of Chippenham for a seat in the lower house.

In a by-election , Radice was first elected to the House of Commons on March 1, 1973 in the Chester-le-Street constituency and represented this constituency until the June 9, 1983 general election , before he was subsequently elected to the June 7, 2001 elections represented Durham North constituency in the House of Commons. During his long parliamentary membership was Radice, who from 1978 to 1982 member of the advisory board of the think tank Policy Studies Institute, was 1978 to 1979 Parliamentary private secretary to the then Minister of Education and Science, Shirley Williams , and then from 1980 to 1983 and chairman of the party's internal group for manifestos of the Labor Party.

After briefly serving as spokesman for foreign affairs for the opposition Labor group in 1981, he acted as opposition spokesman for employment between 1981 and 1983. In 1983 he was appointed to his party's shadow cabinet , where he held the position of "shadow minister" for education until 1987.

He was then chairman of the European Movement between 1995 and 2001 and has been chairman of the British Association for Central and Eastern Europe since 1997. At the same time he was from 1996 to 1997, first Chairman of the House Committee on Public Service and after 1997-2001 Chairman of the House Committee on the Treasury ( Treasury ). In 1999 he also became a Privy Councilor .

House of Lords

By a letters patent dated July 16, 2001, Radice was raised to the British nobility after his retirement from the House of Commons as a life peer with the title Baron Radice , of Chester-le-Street in the County of Durham . Shortly thereafter took place on 23 October 2001 its introduction ( Introduction ) as a member of the House of Lords . In the House of Lords he belongs to the Labor Party faction.

From 2002 to 2006 he was chairman of the subcommittee of the House of Lords for European economy and temporarily also a member of the subcommittee for European foreign policy. Furthermore, Lord Radice was active as chairman of the French- British Council from 2002 to 2007 and has also been chairman of the social democratic think tank Policy Network since 2007 .
