Coordinates: 31 ° 42 ' S , 148 ° 41' O Gilgandra Shire is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of New South Wales . The area is 4,831.5 km² and has about 4,200 inhabitants.
Gilgandra is located in the north-western region of the state about 440 km northwest of the metropolis of Sydney . The area comprises 23 hamlets and villages: Armatree, Balladoran, Bearbong, Bearbung, Berida, Biddon, Boyben, Breelong, Bringle, Curban, Gilgandra, Innisfail, Kamber, Kickabil, New Merrigal, Pibbon, Tooraweenah , Wallumburrawong, Windurong, Woodlands and parts by Collie, Gulargambone and Mendooran. The headquarters of the Shire Council is in Gilgandra, where about 2,600 people live.

The Gilgandra Shire Council has nine members who are elected by LGA residents. Gilgandra is not divided into districts. The mayor of the council is also recruited from among the councilors.
