Gilgit ( Urdu گلگت) is a city on the Gilgit River , a tributary of the Indus , in the Pakistani part of the Karakoram . It once belonged to Kashmir and is the only city with greater influence in northern Pakistan . The population is 10,414 (as of January 1, 2007).

The city is located on the Karakoram Highway , an important trade route between Pakistan and China , which also makes Gilgit more important.

Gilgit has a small airport that can only be approached during the day and when the weather is good. It is also the switching station for the telephone lines to the northeastern Hunza Valley .

Gilgit is the capital of the Gilgit-Baltistan region , which until 2009 was called the Northern Areas .
