The Gili Islands are a small group of islands in the Bali Sea off the northwest coast of the Indonesian island of Lombok .
The group consists of three small sand islands ( Gili Air , Gili Meno and Gili Trawangan ), each only a few meters above sea level.
Sea turtles live on them and are now strictly protected after years of hunting. Due to tourism and the previously practiced dynamite fishing , which has now also been banned on the Gili Islands, great damage was caused to the coral reefs around the islands. Even so, they are one of the most popular diving and snorkeling spots in the area.
There are no paved roads or motorized vehicles on the islands; The most important means of transport are horse-drawn carriages. The largest and main island Gili Trawangan , on which there are hotels, can be walked around in about two hours .
