Gilles Saussier

Gilles Saussier (* 1965 in Suresnes ) is a French photographer , concept artist and university professor .

life and work

After working as a photographer for Gamma Press Images , Gilles Saussier focused in 1994 on a more conceptual form of photography - somewhere between documentary photography and visual anthropology . In 1995 and 1996 Saussier lived in Dhaka , Bangladesh, and worked there on the Living in the Fringe project , a complex of landscape portraits. Shakara Bazaar (started in 1996) is an ongoing exhibition project in the streets of Old Dakar in which Saussier's photographs are distributed to residents. The series Retour aux Pays / Back to the Landscape (1999) was photographed in the Epte valley . Gilles describes his portraits of hunters, farmers, fishermen and gardeners as panoramic portraits with closed eyes .

Saussier teaches at the École nationale supérieure de la photographie in Arles.

In 2002 Gilles Saussier participated in Documenta11 in Kassel, in 2005 in the exhibition Covering the real at the Kunstmuseum Basel and in 2008 in L'archive universelle. la condition du document et l'utopie photographique moderne (2008) in the Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona .
