Gilles de Kerchove

Gilles de Kerchove d'Ousselghem (born October 3, 1956 in Uccle / Ukkel ) is a senior official of the European Union . From 1995 to 2007 he was Director in the Directorate-General for Justice and Home Affairs of the General Secretariat of the Council of the European Union . Since 2007 he has been the EU's anti-terror coordinator .

Life

De Kerchove studied law at the Université catholique de Louvain in Louvain-la-Neuve and graduated in 1979 with a license . He then worked as an assistant for constitutional and administrative law at the law faculty of his alma mater until 1983, before going to the Yale Law School , where he obtained a Master of Laws (LL.M.) in 1984 .

In 1985 de Kerchove joined the European Commission as a board member in Directorate General IV "Competition". From 1986 to 1995 he worked for the Belgian government as Chief of Staff to the Vice Prime Minister and various ministries.

In his role as Director in the Directorate-General for Justice and Home Affairs, he was instrumental in the negotiations on Eurojust and the European Arrest Warrant . From 1999 to 2000 he was also Vice-Secretary of the Convention, which, under the leadership of the former Federal President Roman Herzog , drafted the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union . On September 19, 2007 he was appointed as the successor to Gijs de Vries as the EU's anti-terrorist coordinator .

In addition to his administrative duties, de Kerchove is also a lecturer in law at the Université catholique de Louvain , the Université Libre de Bruxelles and the Facultés Universitaires Saint-Louis .
