Gina Manès (real name Blanche Moulin ; born April 7, 1893 in Paris , † September 6, 1989 in Toulouse ) was a French actress .

Life

She started her career at the Paris Variety Theater . In 1918 she made her film debut with Louis Feuillade , then played under the directors René Navarre and Jean Epstein and rose to become one of the leading French screen stars in the course of the 1920s. She reached a peak of her popularity in 1927 as Joséphine de Beauharnais in Abel Gance's film Napoleon .

Afterwards she was the title heroine in You shall not commit adultery! , an adaptation of the novel Thérèse Raquin by Émile Zola , which Jacques Feyder shot in Berlin. After that she played in Germany for some time. In the 1930s, she rarely received major film roles, but stayed in the headlines for her eccentric public appearances. On November 12, 1942, she was seriously injured during a circus act with tigers.

At the end of the 1940s, Manès went to Morocco and ran an acting school there. From there she kept returning to Paris for film and theater roles. It was not until 1972 that she ended her acting activity.
