The gorse heather wavy welted spanner ( Scotopteryx coarctaria , syn .: Ortholitha coarctata ) is a butterfly from the spanner family (Geometridae). The species name is derived from the Latin word coarcto with the meaning "narrow" and refers to the narrow central field on the upper side of the forewing of the butterfly.

The moths reach a wingspan of 23 to 28 millimeters. There is no sexual dimorphism between the sexes in terms of color . The fore wing color varies on the upper side from white-gray to dark-gray and brown-gray. The disk region is bordered by dark, strip-like transverse lines and contains a punctiform discoidal spot . The whitish wavy line stands out clearly. The upper side of the hind wing is colored gray-brown with almost no drawing.

Caterpillar

Adult caterpillars are slender and brownish to yellow-green in color. The dark back line is interrupted, the thin whitish side stripes are indistinct. The spiracles are black.

Similar species

The moths of Phibalapteryx virgata lack the whitish wavy line on the upper side of the fore wing.

distribution and habitat

The distribution area of ​​the gorse heather wavy straps stretches from Spain and southern France through Italy and the Balkans to the Urals . In Central Europe the occurrence is very patchy. The main habitat are warm areas with limestone soil.

Way of life

The moths are mainly nocturnal and mainly fly from April to June. At night they appear on artificial light sources . The caterpillars feed primarily on the leaves of gorse - ( Genista ), goat clover - ( Cytisus ) or species of asparagus ( Onobrychis ). The species overwinters in the pupal stage .
