Giola Gandini (born May 19, 1906 in Parma , † September 17, 1941 in Venice ) was an Italian painter who worked exclusively in Venice.

life and work

Giola Gandini was born as the daughter of Diomira Di Centa and Ernesto Gandini in Parma, but she and her family lived in Venice. As a child she suffered from polio , but still got permission to teach ( licenza magistrale ) and she became an outstanding pianist .

She lived secluded on the second floor of a building across from San Geremia , from where she could look out the window over the Grand Canal to the Fontego dei Turchi and the Santa Lucia train station . She also had her studio there.

Although she attended the Scuola del nudo of the Regia Accademia veneziana , as well as the studios of the painters Bruno Saetti and Armando De Stefani , she developed her style largely self-taught. Her creative phase focused on the years between 1929 and 1941. She took part in numerous exhibitions, for example in the Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa , at the second Quadriennale in Rome in 1935, and finally at the 1940 Biennale in Venice. Since it was difficult for her to leave the house, she mainly painted the residents of the house in which she lived.

Her last painting Donna appoggiata from 1941 is considered a kind of testament . In the fascist cultural newspaper Emporium , someone wrote an obituary under the pseudonym "Candida".

Gandini was only rediscovered at the end of the 20th century. In 2014 some of her works were exhibited in Mirano , along with those by Maria Vinca , Ernesta Oltremonti and Gabriella Oreffice.
