The Giordan Lighthouse ( Ta 'Ġurdan Lighthouse or Gordan Lighthouse ) is located near the village of Għasri on the island of Gozo in Malta . The 22 m high tower was built in 1851 during the British rule of Malta on the approximately 160 m high Gurdan Hill on the north-west coast of the island to direct shipping in the region. The fire has a height of 180 meters above sea level .

history

A navigation aid has been available at this point since the 1650s. Planning and construction of today's tower took place in the years 1851 to 1853, it was put into operation on October 15, 1853. Initially the tower had 21 oil lamps, seven on each of the three sides to the sea. Silver-plated brass reflectors amplified the light, giving it a range of up to 38 miles. After renovations in 1962 and 1994, the tower is now electrified and automated. The tower is operated by the Malta Maritime Authority .

In the past you could see the light of the tower practically everywhere on the island, today the light intensity is reduced because such a strong light is no longer required due to the modern navigation options.

There is a weather station in the tower that also collects data for the Global Atmosphere Watch . There is also a radar station in front of the tower .

reachability

From Ghasri a small road leads to a parking lot below the tower. From there you can reach the plateau via a paved path. On the plateau there are still some ruins of a colonial military observation post. The tower offers a 360 ° panoramic view over the entire island of Gozo. Since the tower is no longer occupied, it cannot be visited.
