Giorgio Bambini (born February 24, 1945 in La Spezia , Italy ; † November 13, 2015 ) was an Italian heavyweight boxer.

career

His greatest achievement was winning the bronze heavyweight medal at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City . With points wins against the representative of the Federal Republic of Germany , Dieter Renz , and the Bulgarian Kiril Pandow , he qualified for the semifinals, where he met the American George Foreman . However, Bambini had no chance against Foreman and lost by knockout in the second round.

Further successes as an amateur boxer were victories at the Italian championships 1965–1968, as well as winning the Mediterranean Games in 1967.

As a professional he was fifteen times in the ring and won fifteen times. Bambini, however, did not fight against any well-known opponents, so that he was hardly paid any attention. After just over two and a half years in the professional business, he said goodbye to boxing.
