Giorgio Frassineti (born September 29, 1964 in Forlì ) is an Italian politician of the Partito Democratico (PD) and mayor of Predappio since 2009 .

Live and act

In 1990 Giorgio Frassineti graduated from the University of Bologna with a degree in geography.

In June 2009 he took over the mayor's office of the municipality of Predappio, the birthplace of Mussolini, with a center-left coalition . The community of 6,000 inhabitants is located in the Italian region of Emilia-Romagna .

Due to the historical importance of Predappio, Frassineti was particularly keen to support the preservation of the buildings, especially those from the 20th century. Frassineti not only wants to preserve these buildings, but also to breathe life back into them. The mayor advocates a stronger cultural and economic commitment in Predappio, with the aim of freeing the community from the taint of its dubious history. Giorgio Frassineti represents his concerns at an association for the protection and preservation of the architectural heritage of fascist planned cities.

By working intensively on the topic, the community council developed the idea of an international documentation center for the 20th century.

Documentation Center of the 20th Century

With this concept, Frassineti wants to enable a critical examination of the time of fascism and beyond that of the entire 20th century. The planned documentation center is to offer a permanent exhibition on 1,000 m², which Italian and international historians - under the direction of the Parri Institute from Bologna - are to develop scientifically and according to the latest didactic methods. In addition, there should be space in the documentation center for various projects that enable a critical and objective reappraisal of that time and at the same time should also bring about "learning through the past". This results in numerous synergies with the project House of Responsibility for the Adolf Hitler Birthplace in Braunau am Inn, which, in addition to intensive cooperation, could also include the possible dispatch of a memorial servant to the future documentation center in Predappio.

In September 2011, at the invitation of Andreas Maislinger , Giorgio Frassineti and Oscar winner Branko Lustig took part in the 20th Braunau Contemporary History Days “Difficult Heritage”. On July 19, 2016, the Predappio Municipal Council officially gave the Parri Institute the permission to build the documentation center. For the realization 3,000,000 euros are required, 2,000,000 euros are to be provided by the Emilia-Romagna region from EU structural funds.

For his special commitment to give Predappio a new image, Giorgio Frassineti was awarded the Austrian Holocaust Memorial Award on September 3, 2016 .
