Metropolises in the Philippines

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

There are twelve metropolises in the Philippines , which have been defined by the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA).

Goal setting

The authority wants to achieve that these regions are better able to cope with the global challenges. The main focus should be directed to a better competitiveness of the metropolises, which should be achieved through the following strategies: social housing, improved electricity and water supply, expansion of public transport, waste disposal, environmental and disaster control, simplification of bureaucratic processes and the fight against corruption .

Demarcation

The most populous metropolis is Metro Manila with 12.88 million inhabitants (as of 2015). However, the urbanized area of this metropolis has long since outgrown its borders and now extends over large parts of the provinces Bulacan , Rizal and Cavite as well as the northern part of Batangas' with an estimated population of (2015) more than 23 million.

The urbanized area of what is currently the fifth largest metropolis, Metro Angeles , extends beyond the defined area into the municipalities of Magalang , Mexico and Santo Tomas .

In other metropolises, however, the boundaries were defined very generously; the urbanized area of the Metro Cagayan de Oro and that of the Metro Davao cover around 15% of the respective land area. Metro Iloilo-Guimaras also includes the entire, predominantly rural island province of Guimaras , to which there is no connection by land.
