Metro Iloilo-Guimaras
The Iloilo Metropolitan Area , also known as Metro Iloilo-Guimaras , is one of the 12 metropolitan areas in the Philippines . It is located on the islands of Panay and Guimaras and is administered by the Metro Iloilo-Guimaras Economic Development Council (MIGEDC).
In terms of population, it is the sixth largest of the Philippine metropolitan areas . In 2015 it had approx. 0.89 million inhabitants on almost 1000 km² of land. (Definition of the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA)).
This area is named after the city of Iloilo City and consists of 10 other parishes. The province of Guimaras also includes a decidedly rural area, while the communities on Panay are partly heavily urbanized . When the metropolis was founded in 1995, extensive infrastructure measures were also decided. The construction of the Iloilo International Airport , which opened in 2007, is just as much a part of it as a (yet to be built) bridge between Panay and Guimaras.
With population growth of around 1.7% per year over the last 25 years, Metro Iloilo-Guimaras is at the bottom of the twelve Philippine metropolises.
