Geographical location
Buenavista is located on the northern tip of the island of Guimaras and is one of the five municipalities in the province of Guimaras. The coast in the northern and northwestern part of the municipality lies opposite the island of Panay , from which Buenavista is separated by the Strait of Iloilo . The northeast coast is opposite the island of Negros and is separated from it by the Guimaras Strait .

Buenavista is the oldest parish in Guimaras. It was founded in 1775 during the Spanish colonial rule. According to historians, the Spanish Governor General of the Philippines was deeply impressed by the landscape of the township and was therefore described by him as a "good lookout".

The McArthur Quay serves as a landing stage for Buenavista and parts of San Lorenzo and is used by passengers on the way from Panay to Negros, as this connection is cheaper than the direct route by ship.
