Leganés is a southern suburb of Madrid in Spain . It is 665 meters above sea level and covers an area of ​​around 43 km². On January 1, 2019, the municipality had 189,861 inhabitants.

history

Leganés was founded in 1280 by Alfonso X founded.

During the Spanish Civil War , the city was the seat of government of the republic until the conquest of Madrid by Franco on November 2, 1936.

On April 3, 2004, seven attackers in the March 11, 2004 attack blew themselves up in an apartment in Leganés when a special unit of the Grupo Especial de Operaciones tried to arrest them. The men and a policeman died.
