Giorgos K. Katsimbalis ( Greek Γιώργος Κ. Κατσίμπαλης , * 1899 in Athens ; † July 25, 1978 ibid) was a Greek intellectual, literary critic, neo-Greekist and literary translator.

Life

Katsimbalis was the son of the scholar Konstantinos Katsimbalis and grew up in an intellectually stimulating environment. He began studying law at the University of Paris , but returned to Athens without a degree. There he published studies on Kostis Palamas , of which he was personally deeply impressed, as well as on other important Greek and European poets. He influenced the generation of the 1930s with articles in magazines such as Τα Νέα Γράμματα (1935–1944) and the Αγγλοελληνική Επιθεώρηση (1945–1952), which he himself published . In addition, he published an anthology of modern Greek poetry in English translation with Theodore Ph. Stephanides. Above all, his bibliographies on writers and poets such as Kostis Palamas, Alexandros Papadiamantis , Kostas Krystallis , Konstantinos Kavafis , Angelos Sikelianos , Nikos Kazantzakis , Giorgos Seferis , with whom he was in correspondence, are numerous , but also foreign ones such as Walt Whitman , Charles Baudelaire , Edgar Allan Poe or Arthur Rimbaud .

In the novel The Colossus of Maroussi by Henry Miller (1940), Katsimbalis is listed as the character defining the title of the novel. Both had undertaken a 5 month trip to Greece the year before.
