Giovan Pietro Maffei also Giampietro Maffei (* 1536 in Bergamo ; † October 20, 1603 in Tivoli ) was holder of the chair of eloquence in Genoa and secretary of the Republic of Genoa .

Maffei entered the Jesuit order on August 26, 1565 and was the director of the Collegium Romanum for the next six years . In the following years he published, especially in the field of historiography.

  • History of the Indian Jesuit mission with a collection of letters from the same. (1585, Latin)
  • Life story of St. Ignatius (1588, Latin)
  • Life stories of 17 confessors of Christ (1595, Italian)
  • History of the pontificate of Gregory XIII; After a revision by Paul Teggioc printed by K. Cocquelines in 1742. (Italian)
  • Commissioned by Clement VIII to continue the story about Gregory XIII.

There were 3 books about Sixtus V. They remained unfinished due to his death. (Printed in Bergamo in 1746)
