Giovanni Antonio Fenice

Giovanni Antonio Fenice (* 16th century in Ferrara ; † 17th century ) was an Italian lexicographer and Italianist .

life and work

Fenice came from the Protestant environment of Renée de France , the wife of the Duke of Ferrara Ercole II. D'Este . In Protestant Switzerland he published the first named alphabetical bilingual dictionary French-Italian (with an Italian-French appendix), which Matthias Le Noir, the finance minister of King Henry III. (France) was dedicated. The book translates 14,600 French and 13,600 Italian words, but is primarily aimed at the Italian user. The first later editor was Pierre Canal .

Whether the anonymous vocabulaire en langue francoise, et italienne necessaire pour plus familierement comprendre l'une et l'autre langue , Lyon 1583 (121 pages, published by Benoist Rigaud) should be considered the beginning of the alphabetic bilingual lexicography French-Italian is disputed .
