Giovanni Battista Bovicelli
Giovanni Battista Bovicelli (* around 1550 in Assisi ; † around 1594 ) was an Italian Franciscan , composer , singer and music theorist .
Live and act
Even in his youth, Bovicelli was a member of the Milan Cathedral Choir. In 1583 he was named as a soprano in the directory of the cathedral. He also worked as cantor for Cardinal Carlo Borromeo , after his death he stayed in the Milan Cathedral Choir, where he was noted in 1597 with a grant of 159 liras.
His most important publication was a textbook on the art of ornamentation in madrigals and motets, as they were common in the Milanese church music of the late Renaissance, under the direction of Damiano Scarabelli († 1598). The work bears the title; Regole, passaggi di musica, madrigali et motetti passegiati and was published in Venice in 1594. The script includes methods of embellishing melodic units, articulation, and techniques of "virtuous singing".
Bovicelli created, among other things, elaborate decorations for works by Palestrina , Cipriano de Rore , Victoria and Claudio da Correggio , which are still played today in these versions.
