Giovanni Croce

Giovanni Croce (* 1557 in Chioggia ; † May 15, 1609 in Venice ) was an Italian composer , conductor and priest of the Venetian Renaissance.

Giovanni Croce was a pupil of Gioseffo Zarlino . From 1565 he worked as a choirboy and singer, from 1594 as Vice Kapellmeister and from 1603 to 1609 as Kapellmeister at St. Mark's Basilica in Venice. It was important for the development of the concert style of the Venetian school . He composed madrigals , canzonets , motets , masses and organ music , among other things . Through an acquaintance with John Dowland made in the mid-1590s , his works found dissemination in England.
